The treatment of obesity with an endoscopic gastric balloon is one of the traditional treatment methods that has been successfully applied for many years.
However, since anesthesia is required during the procedure and the procedure is performed with the help of an endoscope, some concern can occur to the patient’s mind.
For these reasons, a swallowable gastric balloon has been developed instead of traditional methods.
How is the applicatıon of the swallowable balloon?
Placement of The Balloon
The patients swallow the uninflated capsule-shaped balloon at the end of a thin wire with plenty of water. For patients who have difficulty swallowing the balloon, the doctor can help the patients swallow the balloon with the help of a thin stylet. After the balloon reaches the stomach, the doctor makes sure that the balloon reaches the right place in the stomach with the help of imaging methods such as x-ray.
Inflating The Balloon
A thin wire-like apparatus at the tip of the balloon inflates the balloon. The doctor, who is sure that the balloon is in the right place, starts inflating the balloon with the help of the apparatus at the end of the balloon. The balloon is inflated with approximately 500 mL of water containing potassium sorbate, and after inflating enough, its final position is checked again. After the controls, the apparatus at the end of the balloon is carefully removed by the doctor.
